A well-placed lamp lights the keyboard and the page without showing up in the panel. Three lamps, three situations.

Our pick
For a home-office desk with a screen, the Dyson Solarcycle Morph is the one that settles the question for good: its optical head rotates 360° to put the light exactly where it is needed, and it adjusts its own tint and brightness to daylight.

On a small desk, the Xiaomi LED Desk Lamp 2 suspends a 60 cm head horizontally, with room for a laptop underneath. If budget comes first, the Xiaomi Desk Lamp Lite does the essentials, provided you accept a fixed light tint.

A screen is a shiny surface, even with a matte finish. Any light source placed in front of it, higher than your line of sight, ends up in the panel. It is not a question of brand or power: it is the angle between the lamp head, the screen and your eyes.
The fix fits in one sentence: a wide head that sends light downwards, placed to the side and slightly behind the keyboard. The articulated arm exists precisely to find that position, then to keep it from one day to the next without moving everything again.
A neutral white, around 4,000 K, is close to daylight and suits working. In the evening, a warmer white tires less and signals the end of the day better. A lamp offering a single tint forces you to choose between the two, and in Belgium, between November and February, you switch the lamp on well before 5 pm.
Power, on the other hand, is almost always adjustable, at least over three levels. What simple models most often lack is the tint setting. Of the three lamps here, the Dyson and the Xiaomi LED Desk Lamp 2 offer it; the Lite trades it for a smaller footprint and a lower budget.
Three lamps from major brands, available on Amazon, with an official website and a readable spec sheet. They cover three distinct situations: a fixed desk where you also work on paper, a small desk where a laptop has to slide under the light, and a tight budget for a secondary workspace.
None was tested in a lab. The characteristics quoted come from the manufacturer pages and the Amazon listings, nothing else. Each card below also says when not to choose it: that is often the most useful information.

Our pick
An optical head that rotates 360°, 850 lumens and colour rendering above 90 according to Dyson: it tracks the daylight where you live to set its own tint and brightness, cooler in the afternoon, warmer in the evening.
Avoid ifYou want a light or discreet lamp: it weighs 3.5 kg and stands 52 cm tall. Daylight tracking and fine controls go through the MyDyson app.

For a small desk
A 60 cm head suspended horizontally, with room for a laptop underneath: it lights the full width of the desk, with Ra95 colour rendering according to Xiaomi and touch sliders for tint and brightness.
Avoid ifYou want to aim the light to one side or at a wall: the head stays horizontal and the arm only tilts 25°, forwards and backwards.

Budget pick
A slim LED bar on a flat base, three brightness levels and Ra90 colour rendering: the minimum that works, for a secondary workspace.
Avoid ifYou often work in the evening: the tint is fixed at 3,900 K, there is no warm white.

Not quite. The bar lights the desk from the top of the screen; the lamp also lights the paper, the keyboard and whatever sits next to them. The two complement each other: the bar for the panel, the lamp for the work surface. Our light-bar guide covers the other half.
On the side opposite your writing hand, with the head level with the top of the screen or slightly lower, tilted towards the keyboard. If you can see the light source in the switched-off panel, you will see it switched on too: move it back or lower the head.
The lumen figure alone says little: what matters is the light that reaches the surface. For writing or reading paper, around 500 lux on the work area is enough. Beyond that, the gap with the screen widens and the fatigue comes back from the other side.
