Which headset for meetings: what actually matters

What people judge on a video call is your microphone, not your audio. Three wired headsets, from the most isolating to the lightest.

Short answer

If you chain meetings all day, the Evolve2 40 SE: noise-cancelling boom mic and genuine stereo isolation.

If you work in a shared office and must stay reachable around you, the mono Evolve 30 II leaves one ear free.

The Evolve 10 is the serious minimum for occasional meetings. Over six hours of calls, the headband makes itself known.

How these were chosen

The microphone, before the audio
Nobody notices good sound reproduction on a call. Everybody notices a mic that picks up the keyboard and the street.
Wired or wireless
Wired removes pairing, battery and latency. For a fixed desk that is an advantage, not a step backwards.
Mono or stereo
Stereo isolates and tires attention less. Mono keeps contact with the room. It is a question of context, not quality.

You are judged on your microphone

In a meeting, the only thing others perceive of your equipment is how intelligible your voice is. A €200 headset with a badly placed mic sounds worse than a €60 headset with a boom.

Distance does everything. A mic four centimetres from the mouth has a signal-to-noise ratio nothing built into a screen can match.

The mute button you find without looking

It is the criterion nobody mentions and everybody uses twenty times a day. An inline mute with a tactile marker saves hunting for the call window while someone is talking to you.

All three models here have an inline control. That is the minimum to require.

What does not matter

Music reproduction, the number of drivers, the word "gaming". None of it improves a meeting.

If you also want to listen to music, keep two devices: a meeting headset on the desk, earphones for the rest. Combining both uses gives a mediocre compromise at both.

Frequently asked questions

Is the laptop microphone not enough?
It picks up the whole room, including your keyboard and the fridge. A boom mic sits four centimetres from your mouth: it captures your voice and far less of everything else.
Do I need active noise cancellation?
For meetings, no. The passive isolation of a closed cup is enough, and active cancellation adds a cost that only pays off in constant noise, like a train.
USB or jack?
USB, when you have the choice: the sound card is in the headset, so the result does not depend on the quality of the machine’s input.
