Lumbar support: what really helps before changing chairs

A good chair costs a lot. A lumbar support costs little and corrects the most common fault: the pelvis rolling back.

Short answer

Set your seat height first, so your feet rest flat and your thighs run parallel to the floor. A lot of pain disappears there, without buying anything.

If the backrest stays flat in the small of your back, the QUTOOL fills the gap and stops the pelvis rolling backwards. The Niceeday does the same more gently and moves to the car. The basic model exists to test the idea without commitment.

How these were chosen

Seat height, first
Feet flat, thighs parallel to the floor, knee angle open. Until that is true, no cushion will compensate.
Thickness relative to your backrest
On an already contoured backrest, adding foam pushes you forward and creates a new strain.
How well the attachment holds
A cushion that slides every hour ends up in a corner within a week. Adjustable straps hold better than elastics.

The most common fault

Sitting for a long time, the pelvis rolls backwards and the lower back rounds. The flat backrest of an ordinary office chair does not oppose it: it touches the shoulder blades, not the lumbar area.

A lumbar support fills that gap. It is not extra comfort, it is a support that prevents a movement.

What to adjust before buying

Raise or lower your seat until your elbows meet the desktop with your arms by your sides. Then look at your feet: if they dangle, you need a footrest before a cushion.

Finally, push your pelvis to the back of the seat. Half of the lower-back pain in remote work comes from people sitting on the edge of their chair.

When a cushion will not be enough

If your chair has no height adjustment, if the backrest does not recline, or if the seat has collapsed in the middle, no accessory will make up for the base. That is the moment to look at a real chair.

But try the cushion first: it costs the price of a meal and settles the question in two weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Does a lumbar cushion replace an ergonomic chair?
No. It corrects one specific thing: an unsupported lumbar curve. It corrects neither a seat that is too high, nor armrests at the wrong height, nor a backrest that will not recline.
Do I need a footrest?
Only if, once the seat is set so your elbows meet the desk, your feet no longer touch the floor. That is common below 1 m 70.
How long before I feel a difference?
A few days. If nothing has changed after two weeks, the problem is elsewhere — most often in desk height or screen height.
